The past few months have been a whirlwind of social change! The worldwide spread of
COVID-19 / Coronavirus has impacted much of the way we interact with each other and
with the world around us and has led to a major shift in how we understand and respond
to global issues. Results of this include the closure of borders, implementation of social
distancing and stay-at-home mandates, and increased scrutiny on actions by global
leaders in response to this pandemic. These are going to have long-lasting effects
socially, economically, and politically.
Here’s where we come in! I want you to pick 3 chapter topics from our semester and
apply them to the current global issue of COVID-19 / Coronavirus. The topics you can
pick from include:
● Social Movements
● Culture
● Socialization
● Social Structure and Interaction
● Deviance
● Stratification
● Sex, Gender, Sexuality
● Race and Ethnicity
● Families
● Education and Religion
● Government and Economy
● Age, Environment, and Health
You will also need to take any 1 of your topics and apply our three theoretical
perspectives; functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction.
The paper is worth 100 points, will be approximately 3-4 pages in length,
double-spaced, in a readable 12-point font, and will include the following:
1. Introduction (5 points) – Define the global pandemic and discuss why it is an
important issue
2. Chapter topic (20 points each x 3 = 60 points total)
1. Locate and briefly summarize an article discussing your topic in
relation to COVID-19 (5 points); this can be an academic article or
a news article (be mindful about what news source you are using!)
2. Provide a working link to the article you are using (2 points)
3. Explain your understanding of how this article illustrates the
chapter topic (9 points); as an example, if you locate an article that
discusses how the pandemic is affecting families, I want you to
describe how it relates to what we learned about families
4. Use any term from the chapter you are referencing to help you with
your analysis. Make sure any and all terms you use are bolded (2
points) and defined (2 points)! There is no minimum or maximum
to how many terms you need to use.
3. Exploration of the 3 theoretical perspectives as they relate to 1 of your
chapter topics (10 points each x 3 = 30 points total)
1. Functionalism (10 points)
2. Conflict theory (10 points)
3. Symbolic interactionism (10 points)
4. Conclusion
You need to cite your sources in APA format, including in-text citations and a works
cited / references page at the end. The works cited / references page DOES NOT count
towards your total pages. Purdue University has a great reference for APA formatting
